i have this question in my mind about art and it puzzels me at times. first off i do not want 2 start any arguments here, just some thoughts and opinins PLEASE. the question is, is something good because of the way it was made or because of its appearance.

Skins are not strictly 'art' as they can and do include specifics of 'design' which in itself is not 'expression' as such.

Very well said...

Skinning is more closely related to Architecture than it is to Fine Art.

*cough* Bullshit *cough* :

I see your point however I think it's up to the skin author to express themselves within the constraints of the design.

I see it that way....whereas making a wall is more a matter of art....WBSkins have a function they need to perform, much like designing a building or a car.

Essencay wonders when he will move beyond the Trabant stage of skinning

What is "Art?" Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. My 4 year old boy makes art. But the rest of you would probably call it scribbling. My keyboard, for that matter, could be considered "Art." Especially to a person who has never seen one or to the person who might have spent months or even years designing it. For something to be "Art" there has to be an appreciation for it from a person. Appreciation and Art are 2 different things, but without appreciation, nothing is art. It's just another "Thing" until someone appreciates it.

At the same time, something could be appreciated but not really be art. I "Appreciate" my keyboard but I wouldn't call it "Art."

Therefore, "Art" is more than how it was made and how it looks. Many more factors come in to play. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...but art is something else all together.

I think I confused myself.

Case in point...Most of us would not call this https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=8&SkinID=7207 art.

But we do appreciate the message it presents.

At the same time, there are people who do appreciate it and would call it art. They appreciate it for a completly different reason.

Art is a complicated mix of many more things than how it was made and what it looks like. We could debate what those things are for 100 years and never get to the heart of it.

Heck...some would say that "Art" is a label someone puts on something just to make money.

I just don't think it's more one than the other. I think skinning is as much art as design.

If that's your opinion....say so....just fix your 'cough' while you're at it.

art vs means of making it....the appearance is always important, but the means of getting there is another story. Take for example "presets", yeah....the models and shapes you found and use do make good art......THANK THE PERSON WHO MADE IT!! But yeah, a lot of work for "someone" still went into it, thank those people. Bryce blobs take you 43.2 seconds to make? Sure, but how long did it take the programmer to make that possible. Who puts more work into it...the guy at Wal-Mart that mixes the paint, or the guy that MADLY FLINGS IT ONTO A CANVAS!?

Art, noun: Creative or imaginative activity, especially the expressive arrangement of elements within a medium.

Go figure

From the first thought to the end product (idol) there is a mix of things which lend to what most consider to be art.

thinking about that, it leaves to many visions of anal projectile painting and other various nasty visions fitting into it...

you can give 2 people the same palette of presets - it's entirely possible for 1 person to create a work of art and for the other person to create a pile of... er, well, you know

it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it...althought the former may influence the latter, hehe
